Why run Windows Server on a VPS

Run Windows-only software

Use applications that do not exist for Linux, from trading terminals to accounting software.

A familiar desktop

Manage the server with the Windows desktop over Remote Desktop instead of a command line.

The Microsoft stack

Host ASP.NET sites on IIS and run SQL Server, the same way as on your own Windows machines.

Always on

Keep programs, bots and terminals running 24/7 without leaving your own computer on.

Why experienced users choose Windows Server

Runs Windows applications

Desktop programs and services that have no Linux version run as they do on a PC.

Familiar graphical management

Server Manager and the Windows desktop make common tasks point-and-click.

PowerShell automation

Script installs, updates and configuration, locally or remotely.

Built-in security

Windows Defender Antivirus and Windows Firewall are on by default.

The Microsoft stack

IIS, ASP.NET and SQL Server work together the way Windows developers expect.

Long support

Windows Server 2022 receives security updates until October 2031.

Who Windows Server is best for

Traders

Run MetaTrader and other trading terminals or bots without interruptions.

.NET developers

Host ASP.NET applications and services on IIS.

Small businesses

Run accounting or line-of-business software that your team reaches over Remote Desktop.

Windows automation

Scheduled tasks, PowerShell scripts and tools that need Windows.

When Windows Server is not the best choice

A simple website or Linux app

Linux uses fewer resources and runs on smaller, cheaper plans for most web hosting.

See Ubuntu VPS

Many simultaneous desktop users

Windows Server allows two administrator sessions at once. More users need Remote Desktop Services licences, which you buy separately.

Best workloads for a Windows Server VPS

Trading terminals

MetaTrader 4 and 5, bots and expert advisors.

ASP.NET on IIS

Websites and APIs built with .NET.

SQL Server

Databases for your Windows applications.

Remote office

Accounting and office software your team uses remotely.

Game servers

Dedicated servers for games that only ship for Windows.

Automation and bots

Scheduled tasks and Windows tools that run around the clock.

How much VPS does Windows Server need?

A remote desktop and a browser1 vCPU, 2 GB RAM

Several terminals or an IIS site4 vCPU, 8 GB RAM
SQL Server or office software for a team6 vCPU, 16 GB RAM

Windows Server updates and server maintenance

Your VPS is self-managed: you decide when updates and upgrades happen. These habits keep it secure.

  • Install Windows updates monthly

Microsoft releases security updates every month; install them and restart at a quiet time.

  • Protect Remote Desktop

Use a long password, keep Network Level Authentication on and allow RDP only from your own IP addresses if you can.

  • Keep Defender running

Leave real-time protection on and add exclusions only for folders that need them.

  • Back up your data

Copy important files and databases off the server regularly.

Get started with your Windows Server VPS

  1. 1

    Connect with Remote Desktop

Open Remote Desktop Connection (mstsc) on Windows, or the Windows App on macOS, and sign in as Administrator with the password from your client area.

    mstsc /v:YOUR_SERVER_IP
  2. 2

    Install updates

Open Windows Update and install all available updates, then restart.

    sconfig
  3. 3

    Change the password

Set a new, strong Administrator password, and add your own user if others will sign in.

    net user Administrator *

Windows Server compared with common alternatives

AlternativeMain differenceChoose it when
UbuntuNeeds less memory, costs less and has no licence considerations.Your software runs on Linux, such as most websites and web apps.
AlmaLinuxThe usual base for cPanel web hosting servers. You want to host websites with cPanel.
DebianVery lightweight and stable for long-running Linux services. You need a small, always-on Linux server such as a VPN.

Compare operating systems

You choose the system when you deploy and can reinstall with another one later from your client area. Windows runs on our Windows-ready plans, Fedora on our NVMe cloud plans.

Windows Server VPS FAQ

Which Windows versions can I install?

Windows Server 2022 and Windows Server 2019. We recommend 2022, which receives security updates until October 2031.

How do I connect to my Windows VPS?

With Remote Desktop (RDP). Use the server's IP address, the user Administrator and the password from your client area.

How many people can use the server at once?

Two administrator sessions are included. For more simultaneous users you need Remote Desktop Services licences from Microsoft.

Can I run MetaTrader on the VPS?

Yes. Install MetaTrader 4 or 5 as on any Windows computer; it keeps running when you disconnect.

How much RAM does Windows Server need?

Windows Server runs from 2 GB RAM, enough for a remote desktop and light tools. We recommend 4 GB or more for trading terminals, and 8 GB or more for SQL Server or several users.

Can I switch to Linux later?

Yes. Reinstall the server with Linux from your client area, or ask our team in a support ticket. Reinstalling erases the disk, so back up your data first.

How can I pay?

The Windows VPS plans on this page start at $21.25 a month on yearly billing, which saves 15%, or $25.00 a month paid monthly. You pay in cryptocurrency, such as Bitcoin, USDT and Monero, or from your ClientVPS account balance, and you only need an email address to sign up.

Can I install IIS on my Windows VPS?

Yes. Add the Web Server (IIS) role in Server Manager, or run Install-WindowsFeature Web-Server -IncludeManagementTools in PowerShell.

How do I protect Remote Desktop from attacks?

Use a long, unique password, keep Network Level Authentication on, and if your IP address is fixed, allow RDP only from it in Windows Firewall.

Can I change the Remote Desktop port?

Yes, but open the new port in Windows Firewall before you restart, or you will lock yourself out. A different port reduces automated attempts but does not replace a strong password.
