What is Claude Code VPS hosting?
Claude Code is Anthropic's coding agent for the terminal. It reads your codebase, edits files, runs commands and works with Git, while you approve what it does. A Claude Code VPS is a Linux server where it lives full time, next to your repositories and toolchains.
We provide the server: KVM resources, the operating system and the network. You bring your Claude subscription or API key, your repositories and your credentials, and you stay in control of what the agent may do.
Why run Claude Code on a VPS
Sessions that keep going
Run Claude Code inside tmux and close your laptop; the session is still there when you reconnect.
Away from your personal files
The agent works on a server that holds only your projects, not your documents, browser or password manager.
One workspace, any device
Pick up the same repository and session from your desktop, laptop or phone over SSH.
Fast builds and tests
Dedicated vCPU, NVMe or SSD storage and datacenter bandwidth make installs, builds and test runs quick.
Claude Code on a VPS or on your own computer
| What matters | Your own computer | ClientVPS server |
|---|---|---|
| Uptime | Stops when your computer sleeps, restarts or loses its connection. | Runs around the clock in a datacenter. |
| Isolation | The agent can reach your personal files, browser sessions and saved passwords. | A separate machine that holds only what you put on it. |
| Access | Tied to one device. | Reach it over SSH from your laptop, phone or another computer. |
| Network | Home connections are slower and often block incoming connections. | A fast datacenter connection, a public IP address and DDoS protection. |
| Starting over | Undoing an agent's changes to your own computer can be hard. | Reinstall the system from your client area in minutes. |
What you can do with a Claude Code VPS
Fix failing tests
Point Claude Code at a failing test suite and review the fix before you commit it.
Learn an unfamiliar codebase
Ask how a project is structured and where a feature lives, right next to the code.
Planned features and refactors
Plan multi-file changes first, then let the agent make them on a branch.
Pull requests and issues
Work through issues and prepare pull requests with the GitHub CLI installed on the server.
Scripted and scheduled jobs
Run Claude Code non-interactively with claude -p from cron or a CI job for routine tasks.
How much VPS does Claude Code need?
| What you run | Recommended resources |
|---|---|
| One developer, small projects | 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM |
| Larger repositories, Docker or databases for tests | 4 vCPU, 8 GB RAM |
| Several sessions or a small team | 8 vCPU, 16 GB RAM |
How to set up Claude Code on your VPS
Commands follow the official documentation as of October 2026. Tools like this change quickly, so check the official docs linked below before you run them.
- 1
Deploy a server and connect
Choose a plan with Ubuntu 24.04. When it is ready, connect over SSH with the IP address and password from your client area, and update the system.
ssh root@YOUR_SERVER_IP apt update && apt upgrade -y - 2
Create a user for the agent
Create a normal user with sudo rights, then sign in again over SSH as that user, so the services you install run under it. Add your SSH public key to /home/agent/.ssh/authorized_keys to log in with a key.
adduser agent usermod -aG sudo agent exit ssh agent@YOUR_SERVER_IP - 3
Turn on the firewall
Allow SSH first, then enable the firewall. Dashboards stay on localhost, so no other ports are needed.
sudo ufw allow OpenSSH sudo ufw enable - 4
Install Git and tmux
Git for your repositories, tmux so sessions survive when you disconnect.
sudo apt install -y git curl tmux - 5
Install Claude Code
Use Anthropic's native installer as your agent user. It updates itself in the background. Open a new shell if the claude command is not found yet.
curl -fsSL https://claude.ai/install.sh | bash claude --version claude doctor - 6
Sign in
Start claude and follow the sign-in prompts. On a server without a browser, open the link it shows on your own computer. Or set ANTHROPIC_API_KEY to use a Console API key.
claude - 7
Work inside tmux
Clone your project and start Claude Code in a named tmux session. Detach with Ctrl+B then D, and reattach later with tmux attach -t claude.
git clone YOUR_REPOSITORY_URL project tmux new -s claude cd project && claude
Security basics for Claude Code on a VPS
- Review the commands and file edits Claude Code asks to make, and keep risky work on a separate branch.
- Give Git hosting a deploy key or a token limited to the repositories the agent needs.
- Sign in with SSH keys and turn off password logins.
- Run the agent as a normal user, not as root.
- Turn on a firewall and open only the ports you need, usually just SSH.
- Keep dashboards on localhost and reach them through an SSH tunnel instead of opening them to the internet.
- Store API keys in the tool's own config or environment files, never in a Git repository.
- Give the agent its own API keys with spending limits, and rotate them if you suspect a leak.
- Install security updates regularly and reboot after kernel updates.
- Back up the agent's data directory before upgrades and big changes.
Troubleshooting
claude: command not found
Open a new shell so ~/.local/bin is on your PATH, then run claude --version again.
Sign-in problems
Check that your plan includes Claude Code, run claude doctor, and follow its suggested fixes.
Session lost after disconnecting
Start Claude Code inside tmux; sessions started directly in SSH end when the connection closes.
Server running out of memory
Check usage with free -h and df -h. Large builds or several sessions may need a bigger plan.
When you don't need a Claude Code VPS
You code only at your desk
If you work on one computer and do not need sessions to keep running, Claude Code on that computer may be enough.
Your project needs a local GPU
Claude Code itself needs no GPU, but training or running models locally does. Our VPS plans do not include GPUs.
You don't want to manage a Linux server
A VPS needs updates, backups and basic security. If you prefer not to handle that, use Claude Code on your own machine.
